During
the first Word War, 1914 18, it was keenly felt that if India was
to take her stand in the industrial world, it was imperative to have a
professional body of engineers with the object of providing a high standard
of professional service and engineering tradition as were being rendered
by similar Institutions in Great Britain, France, Germany, America etc.
At the meeting convened by Sir Thomas Holland in Calcutta on January,
3 1919 it was decided to form a Society for the advancement of all branches
of engineering science thus Indian Society of Engineers
was born.
The movement gained momentum and when a meeting was held at Simla on July,
16, 1919, the code of rules was amended and the name of the Society was
changed to The Institution of Engineers (India)".
With the passage of time it was realised that the Institution was not
only a useful organisation to the engineers but that its corporate membership
was a hallmark worth adoration. With a view to provide an opening for
education to personnel engaged in engineering works, the institution decided
to hold qualifying examinations.
Objective of the Institution :
The objects of the Institution as defined in the Royal Charter of Incorporation
granted in 1935 are:
To promote and advance the science, practice and business of Engineering
in all its branches in India.
To establish, subsidise, promote, form and maintain Local Association
of members belonging to the Institution and other engaged
or interested in Engineering so as to assure to each individual member
as far as may be possible equal opportunity to enjoy
the rights and privileges of the Institution.
To diffuse among its members information on all matters affecting Engineering
and to encourage, assist and extend knowledge and information
connected therewith by establishment and promotion of lectures;
discussions or correspondences; by the holding of conference; by the publication
of papers, periodicals or journals, books, circulars
and maps or other literary undertaking; by encouraging research work;
or by the formation of a library or libraries and collection of models,
designs, drawings, and other articles of interest in
connection with Engineering or otherwise howsoever.
To promote the study of Engineering with a view to disseminate the information
obtained for facilitating the scientific & economic
development of Engineering in India.
To encourage inventions and investigate and make known their nature and
merits.
To promote efficiency and just and honourable dealing & to suppress
malpractice in Engineering.
