HISTORY OF THE IEI

During the first Word War, 1914 – 18, it was keenly felt that if India was to take her stand in the industrial world, it was imperative to have a professional body of engineers with the object of providing a high standard of professional service and engineering tradition as were being rendered by similar Institutions in Great Britain, France, Germany, America etc. At the meeting convened by Sir Thomas Holland in Calcutta on January, 3 1919 it was decided to form a Society for the advancement of all branches of engineering science thus ‘Indian Society of Engineers’ was born.

The movement gained momentum and when a meeting was held at Simla on July, 16, 1919, the code of rules was amended and the name of the Society was changed to “The Institution of Engineers (India)".

With the passage of time it was realised that the Institution was not only a useful organisation to the engineers but that its corporate membership was a hallmark worth adoration. With a view to provide an opening for education to personnel engaged in engineering works, the institution decided to hold qualifying examinations.
