Postgraduate Diploma Examinations

The Examination Programme and other related information are being sent to all registered candidates individually for information.

A candidate shall not be allowed to appear in more than three subjects. The subject(s) chosen for the examination should be strictly within the six subjects which the candidate had opted at the time of registration, or as modified by him/her in writing (see relevant rule). Examination Form must be filled-in and signed by the candidate. The candidate shall give the correct Code Numbers of the Examination Centre, Branch and Subject (s), in which he/she desires to appear, and the 8-digit postgraduate registration number in the spaces provided for in the examination application form. The Institution reserves the right to reject incomplete/illegible/late received examination forms. 

Centre-wise index showing inter-alia the registration number and corresponding roll number shall be available both at (i) venue of examination, and (ii) respective State/Local Centre of first choice for information of the applicants whose applications will be found in order in all respects. Admit Card to a candidate will be sent to his/her recorded address in time. Any candidate, who is not eligible to appear at the Examinations, will be duly intimated assigning the reason for rejection of the examination application form.

NOTE : The bound copies of the question papers of the Postgraduate Diploma Examinations (for Part I subjects only) from Summer 2001 Examinations onwards can be obtained by sending Rs. 50/- per set per Engineering Branch (plus Rs. 50/- for postage) through demand draft in favour of `The Institution of Engineers (India)', payable at Kolkata or from the cash counter at the headquarters office on cash payment. Similarly, Syllabus of each branch can be obtained for Rs. 100/- per copy including postage. Please do not forget to mention the branch of engineering while ordering for the old question papers or the syllabus.

Procedure for Calculating the Percentage of Marks

The procedure for calculating the percentage of marks is based on summation of maximum marks in the range of respective letter grades of each subject and dividing by the number of subjects, including the project work and the laboratory experiments.

Section 'A' Examination started at Anpara, Uttar Pradesh

The conduct of Section 'A' Examination has begun at Anpara, Uttar Pradesh with effect from Summer 2008 Examinations. The candidates, who wish to appear from the Anpara Examination Centre, should indicate Centre Code 231 in their Examination Application Form. The candidates attached to the Anpara Local Centre but appearing in Section 'A' (Diploma) Examination from nearby Centres are also eligible to opt for the Anpara Examination Centre (Code 231).

Submission of Examination Forms after the last date shall cause automatic rejection of applications. Plea of ignorance shall not be accepted.

In case of non-receipt of the result of the last examinations for any reason whatsoever, candidates should submit the examination forms within the stipulated date mentioning the subjects in order of preference including the subjects appeared at the last examination. In such a case, the subjects for appearing at the examination will be allotted giving preference to the choice of subjects, excluding the exemptions, if any.

Examination fee shall be refunded only to the pass candidates as per rules.

Time Limit for Carrying Forward Exemptions

A candidate shall be required to pass the Institution Examinations, both in Existing Scheme and Revised Scheme, within a specific period as mentioned hereunder :

Section A    :    6 Years
Section B    :    6 Years

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

Quote telephone number / mobile number / e-mail ID in all examination-related  communication with headquarters, including in the examination application form / application for registration of Section B / extension of examination registration / examination re-registration, etc to maintain better interaction between our members and the headquarters.

 

No acknowledgement is sent regarding receipt of examination form/registration for Section B / extension of examination registration / examination re-registration / application for project work / laboratory experiments. However, membership numbers of all eligible applicants for registration of Section B are being placed on our website one month prior to Summer / Winter examination. Candidates applied for extension of examination registration / examination re-registration, separate identity card shall be issued.

 

List of candidates registered for May / June and November / December sessions for project work and / or laboratory experiments shall be available on our website in last week of May and November, respectively. The list will indicate the name and address of the project guide and / or name of the college / institute for laboratory experiments. In addition, all such candidates shall be informed by ordinary post with due information to their project guide and / or the college.

 

For any examination-related enquiry, members are advised first to visit our website www.ieindia.org In case they do not find the answer, please send the mail only at exams@ieindia.org without marking copy to any other e-mail ID of the Institution. Please do not send exam-related enquiry to any other e-mail ID in your own interest. Efforts are made to reply queries as fast as possible. However, in certain cases, it takes time for verification. Therefore, if members do not receive reply of their e-mails within seven working days, a reminder may be sent.

 

The code number of project work is 901 and of laboratory experiments 902. These code numbers are being used for related correspondence and centre-wise provisional results.

Rules for Candidates who have appeared in Old Scheme

The Section 'A' candidates, who fail to secure exemption in any subject up to and including Winter 2005 Examination, are required to appear in the revised scheme w.e.f. Summer 2006 Examination without paying processing fee of Rs. 400/-.

The Section 'B' candidates, who fail to secure exemption in any subject up to and including Winter 2005 Examination, are required to appear in the revised scheme, forfeiting their earlier project work after submission of

Application for Registration of Section 'B'

with requisite fee of Rs. 2000/- only.

The stipulated period of six years shall be counted w.e.f. Summer 2006 Examination.

Selection of Balance Subjects in Revised Scheme
( with effect from Summer 2006 Examination )

All candidates appeared up to and including Winter 2005 Examination in old scheme are essentially required to opt balance subjects from Revised Scheme to appear from Summer 2006 Examination. For the criteria for selection of balance subjects,

Two-year Extension for Examination Registration

Candidates switched over to revised scheme in Section A/Section B, during the stipulated period in 2005, either on payment of Rs 400/- or having no subject exemption in old scheme up to and including Winter 2005 examination, are not eligible for two-year extension.

Candidates in transitory block, ie, candidates in old scheme secured exemption in one or more subjects in Section A/Section B, appearing in the examination by selecting balance subjects from the revised scheme, are only eligible for two-year extension for examination registration. Such candidates, if unsuccessful in passing Section A or Section B examination with expiry of six-year term in 2008, shall only be eligible to get extension for two-years, ie, for four consecutive examinations with effect from Summer 2009 examination. Six-year period shall be counted for Section A candidate from the date of his election as T/ST member and membership number is higher than T 137883 / ST 400578 and lower than T 139540 / ST 415635. Six-year period shall be counted for Section B candidates from the date of passing Section A Examination, excluding the minimum period required for completion of Project Work, ie, candidates who passed Section A Examination in Summer 2001 or in Winter 2001 should only apply for extension of time limit for examination registration.

Candidates eligible for extension of time limit for examination registration will receive the Application Form for Extension of Time Limit for Examination Registration with Format of Identity Card from Headquarters of the Institution well in advance. Interested candidates should return the Application Form, as received by them, duly filled-in in all respect, along with a demand draft of Rs 600/- (US$ 60 for overseas candidates) drawn on ‘The Institution of Engineers (India)’, Kolkata latest by January 31, 2009. In case address of the candidate, as recorded with the Institution, is changed, the same should be mentioned with Pin Code number in the application on the space provided for, and a separate demand draft of Rs 125/- (US$ 10 for overseas candidates) should also be enclosed along with the application. Late receipt of such applications will not be entertained.

All such candidates are eligible to appear up to Winter 2008 Examination with their existing Identity Card. Applications without the ‘Prescribed Form’ shall be summarily rejected. Complaints regarding non-receipt of form should be lodged during January 15-24, 2009 in the Prescribed Format  along with a demand draft of Rs 600/- (US$ 60 for overseas candidates). In case address recorded with the Institution is changed, a separate demand draft of Rs 125/- (US$ 10 for overseas candidates) should also be enclosed along with a format of change of address Application for Replacement of Identity Card.

Examination Re-registration after Expiry of Two-year Extension in Winter 2008 Examinations

The Council, at its 614th meeting held at Srinagar, approved the Examination Re-registration, after expiry of extension period, for another six years. Candidates in transitory block, who would be unsuccessful in Section A/Section B Examination after expiry of extension period of two years, are eligible to apply for Examination Re-registration. Candidates in transitory block, who failed to apply for extension of two-year period, shall also be eligible to apply for Examination Re-registration only after expiry of the extension period of two years.

For candidates in transitory block, whose extended period of two years will expire in Winter 2008 Examination, Examination Re-registration of six-year period shall be counted with effect from Summer 2009 Examination.

Before applying for Examination Re-registration, candidates are advised to read the following :

1.

Candidates in transitory block, who failed to pass Section A Examination even in the extended period of two years, shall be permitted to appear in Section A Examination afresh in revised scheme only. Subject(s) exemption(s) secured during six-year and extended period of two-years, if any, shall be forfeited. They would be required to pass Section A Examination afresh as per the revised scheme within the stipulated period of six years.

2.

Candidates, who have already passed Section A Examination but would fail to pass Section B Examination even in the extended period of two years, shall be permitted to appear afresh in Section B Examination in revised scheme retaining their Section A status. They would be required to apply for Registration of Section B on the Prescribed Format with a demand draft of Rs. 2000/- (US$ 200 for overseas candidates), in addition to demand draft of Rs. 1500/- for Examination Re-registration with filled-in Prescribed Format In such cases, subject(s) exemption(s) secured during six-years and extended period of two-years, if any, shall be forfeited and they would need to pass Section B Examination afresh as per the revised scheme within the stipulated period of six years. Also, they would be required to do project work and laboratory experiments as per revised rules during the six-year period of Examination Re-registration.

3.
a)

Candidates, under category 1 and 2 above, should apply for Examination Re- registration as per the Prescribed Format along with the fee of Rs. 1500/- (US$ 100 for overseas candidates) by demand draft. Candidates, under category 2, should also apply for Registration of Section B along with a demand draft of Rs.2000/-. If there is any change in address recorded with the Institution, a separate demand draft of Rs. 125/- (US$ 10 for overseas candidates) should be sent along with filled-in Application for Replacement of Identity Card

b)

Candidates are advised to apply for the same so as to reach at the Headquarters office during January 01-31, 2009, failing which they will not be eligible to appear in Summer 2009 Examination.

c)

On receipt of the application for examination re-registration and registration for Section B, as applicable, with requisite fee, a new identity card shall be issued to all  such candidates.

Introduction of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

Candidates Passing Sections A and B Examinations in Revised Scheme

Grade points of all subjects required to appear to complete the entire course, including laboratory experiments and project work, shall be divided by the number of subjects to arrive at the CGPA. This shall only be indicated in the pass grade card of Section B.

Candidates Passed Section A in Old Scheme and Section B in Revised Scheme

Candidates, who have completed Section A in old scheme securing specific marks in all required subjects and subsequently completed Section B in revised scheme securing specific grades in required subjects, CGPA shall be calculated by converting marks of individual subjects of Section A to grade points and then adding grade points of all subjects of Section A, Section B, project work, and laboratory experiments and divided by the number of applicable subjects. No separate grade card for Section A, which is already completed in old scheme, shall be issued.

Candidates Exempted from Section A, by virtue of Passing Sections A & B Examinations earlier, and passed Section B in Additional Branch in Revised Scheme

Such candidates shall be considered similar to those who obtained exemption from Section A by virtue of passing degree in engineering from the recognized university. CGPA for them shall be calculated adding the grade points obtained in required number of subjects in Section B, project work and laboratory experiments and dividing by number of applicable subjects.

Carry Forward of Subject(s) Exemption onChanging Membership from Technician to Senior Technician

On acquiring the diploma level qualification, Technician members, changing their membership to Senior Technician, are eligible to get exemption, on request, in one or more subjects of same nomenclature in both the schemes of revised syllabi, effective from Summer 2005 examination, if obtained Grade C or above in the subject, as Technician member.

Premature Re-Registration for Candidates in Transitory Blockto appear in Revised Scheme

Some candidates in transitory block, i.e., candidates in old scheme secured exemption in one or more subjects, were unable to switchover to revised scheme within the stipulated period in 2005, citing different reasons. They are not interested in passing some subjects in old scheme and some in revised scheme. Now, they have shown interest to appear in Section A/Section B examination afresh in revised scheme, forfeiting their subject(s) exemption in old scheme. The Council, at its 642nd meeting, approved that such category of candidates may also be permitted to appear in revised scheme in Section A/Section B on request, provided they apply for the same with fee of Rs. 1500/-, which is equivalent to examination re-registration fee as they will get six year period afresh like the candidates for examination re-registration. The stipulated period of six years shall be counted from Summer examination of the year in which they submit their application for this purpose.

Such candidates are expected to apply on the Form for Examination Re-registration for Section 'A' / Section 'B' Examination along with a demand draft of Rs. 1500/-. In case of Section B candidates, they would also be required to apply for registration of Section B on the Application Form for Registration for Section 'B' Examination with a demand draft of Rs. 2000/- (US $ 200 for overseas candidates).

Section 'B' Examination in Additional Branch of Engineering for Graduates (formerly Associates) and Corporate Members
General Information

The Institution examination is being conducted only in Revised Scheme from Summer 2006. The conduct of examination in old scheme has been discontinued after Winter 2005. Graduates and Corporate Members are eligible to appear in additional branch of engineering. Members, who intend to appear for the first time in additional branch of engineering or have

appeared in Section B in additional branch in old scheme up to and including Winter 2005 examination and failed to secure any subject exemption, should first apply for registration for Section B on the Prescribed Format sending a demand draft for Rs. 2000/- (US $ 200 for Overseas Chapters candidates). Thereafter, examination application form, along with the demand draft of Rs. 1200/- (US$ 150 for candidates of overseas chapters), should be submitted within the stipulated period. All such candidates are required to perform Project Work and Laboratory Experiment as per clause 2.3 of Rules (Vol. I).


The Graduates - GradIE (formerly Associates - AIE) should quote their membership number as G-xxxxxx/x instead of A-xxxxxx/x in the examination form and all other correspondence.

Selection of Balance Subject (s) in Revised Scheme

All Candidates, appeared up to and including Winter 2005 Examination in old scheme and secured exemption in one or more subjects are required to opt for balance subjects from the Revised Scheme to appear at the examination. For the criteria for selection of balance subjects, click here 

Restriction of transfer of subject (s) exemption (s) for candidates appearing in additional branch in revised scheme

Candidates, having passed Section B Examination in a particular discipline in old scheme and wish to appear in Section B in additional branch in revised scheme, are not eligible to get subject(s) exemption (s) of same nomenclature. However, transfer of subject (s) exemption (s) shall remain valid if it is from one engineering discipline to the other in revised scheme as per clause 2.3.4 of Vol. I : Rules of the Institution Examinations.
Fee for appearance in Extra Subject (s) The grade (s) secured by a candidate in extra subject (s) shall not be considered for improvement of grade (s) secured by him in earlier examinations.

New Examination Rule

The Council, at its 650th meeting held at Shillong approved the addition of following New Examination Rule in 'Rules & Syllabi, Vol. I :

Rule 2.1.4      
If a Technician member, after acquiring diploma level qualification, changes his membership to Senior Technician, s/he shall be considered, on request, as exempted from appearing for Section 'A' Examination, provided s/he has secured exemption (obtained Grade 'C' or above with minimum GPA being 6) in four common subjects of same nomenclature in both Section 'A' (Non-diploma) and Section 'A' (Diploma) of revised syllabi. No pass grade card of Section 'A' shall be issued. S/he shall be eligible to register for Section 'B', with requisite fee, with an undertaking that s/he shall not claim pass grade card for Section 'A'. The CGPA shall be calculated only on the basis of Section 'B' Examination, project work and laboratory experiments.
In case the Technician Member secured exemption in one or more common subject(s) of same nomenclature in both the schemes of revised syllabi, grade in common subject(s) can be carried forward, on request, after change of her/his membership.

Revision of Examination Fee and Examination Re-registration Fee

The Examination Fee has been enhanced from Rs. 1000/- to Rs. 1200/- only with effect from Summer 2008 Examinations. Candidates intending to appear in Summer 2009 Examinations must send, within the stipulated date, their examination application forms along with a demand draft for Rs. 1200/- only.

The Examination Re-registration Fee has been enhanced from Rs. 1200 to Rs. 1500/- only with effect from Summer 2008 Examinations. Candidates, whose two years' extension of examination registration is expired with Winter 2008 examinations, are expected to submit the duly filled-in Form for Examination Re-registration for Section 'A' / Section 'B' Examination along with a demand draft for Rs. 1500/- only so as to reach the Headquarters office of the Institution at Kolkata within January 31, 2009.
